The Airphibian was designed by Rober Edison Fulton Jr. in 1946. It was powered by a 165 hp six cylinder engine capable of 45mph on the road and 120mph in flight. It's airworthyness was certified in December 1950. After landing and before driving the sections were separated and the three bladed propeller was placed on the side of the fuselage. Support casters cranked down to support the fuselage section. The conversion was completed in seven minutes. Four prototypes were made and tested over 200,000 ground miles and 6000 conversion cycles. The high cost of production and certifications caused Fulton to sell his company before commercial manufacturing got underway.
