Test pilot George Aird was flying one of the pre-production English Electric Lighting F1 aircraft on final approach to Hatfield air base on September 13,1962. The tailplane control system failed due to a fire. Aird was forced to eject at 100 feet. He survived with injuries including broken legs. The photographer was Jim Meads. He was a professional photographer who lived near the airfield. Read more here.
