Old School Gasser

This is the type of drag racing that you found in the 1960's Gas Classes. I lost interest in drag racing when bracket racing was introduced. There were rules and restrictions but basically the weight of the car and the displacement of the engine determined which class you were in. There was a subclass in each if you bolted a supercharger on the engine. I had a family friend that raced B and C Gas Supercharged at Quaker City Drag Strip in Salem, Ohio. Sunday afternoon at the races was a great time.

Rambler Lineup

Nash offered the Rambler to a post war United States as a smaller car that could still accommodate a family of five. It used less materials to help reduce costs and was more economical than many of the offerings at the time. Few teenaged drivers dreamed of their parents purchasing a new Rambler for the family, but looking back through the corrective lens of time I would love to have a wagon as pictured sitting in my garage today.

In 1958 the Playmates released Beep Beep. It was on the Billboard charts for 15 weeks peaking at #4.

V12 Shooting brake

Powered by a V12 Merlin similar to what powered the Spitfire and Lancaster bombers from WWII. It had displayed Rolls Royce badging, but apparently a lawsuit ended that boast. the engine has a displacement of 1,650 cubic inches (27 liters).

It was labeled the "Junkyard Mongrel" because most of the parts were obtained from junkyards. Total cost of the car in 1948 is said to be $250.

Volvo Valbo

Coachbuilders didn't ignore Volvo but the majority of vehicles built on the PV445 chassis were commercial vehicles. As many as three coachbuilders did get involved in producing ambulances and a few convertibles. Fewer than 40 convertibles were made. Read more about them at Below the Radar.

1958 Packard

This Packard wagon was one of 159 that were produced. 1958 marked the final year for Packard and they were really more Studebaker than they were Packard. It is difficult to understand how the company could roll into the sunset with a car like this being badged as a Packard.

KdF-Wagen (Beetle sedan)

The Volkswagenwerk factory was destroyed following a series of Allied air raids. That abruptly stopped the production of missile and artillery systems that were being built there. Shortly after the war British engineers found a completely intact KdF-Wagen as well as the machines, tooling and parts used in its production stored in the basement of the facility.

An effort to speed up production resulted in a pickup and gooseneck trailer be assembled from the parts found in the basement. It was used to transport the freshly assembled KdF-Wagens to the inventory lot. In 1947 as production was increased the transporter was disassembled and used for parts.
