Saw this Martin as a random image on the internet.  When I did a google image search I found that Jesse had posted information about it in 2010.  Some information is available on his site at justacarguy.

There are several types of threaded inserts and they are available in various sizes.  They can be used to repair damaged threads or to install metal threads in a material prone to failure (plastics come to mind).  I was using these on a project calling for 2mm machine screws in 3D printed material.

The procedure involved drilling and tapping a hole to 3mm.  The helical insert is "screwed" into the tapped hole and then the horizontal segment is broken off before installing the 2mm machine screw.
