Around the village of Roussillon

Ochre cliffs

Roussillon was Europe's center for ochre pigment production until WW II. It has the world's largest deposit of ochre.

Pont Julien

The only surviving bridge on what was the main road from northern Italy to Provence; the primary route used by the Roman armies. The 2000 year old bridge was in service until 2005.

Palais des Papes, Avignon


The Palais des Papes is considered by some to be the most important medieval building in Europe.  Read more here.

Avignon wall

The Catholic Church bought Avignon in the 1300's. Over time their renovations included erecting a wall around the city.
