Lanz Bulldog

The Lanz company began production in 1921 and was bought by John Deere in 1956. Various versions of the Bulldog were made until 1960. The engine was a single cylinder two stroke design. It was odd in that it did not utilize high compression or have a carburetor. It had a hot bulb that fuel was sprayed onto causing it to ignite. It was capable of burning gasoline, kerosine, diesel fuel or even waste oil. Initial startup of the engine required using a blowtorch to heat the ignition device to operating temperature and then using the steering wheel to hand crank the engine. Wikipedia offers more explanation.
