In Japan there is a vehicle classification called Kei. They are the smallest highway legal passenger cars. They are restricted in dimensions and engine size, similar to EU city cars. Owners of these vehicles enjoy insurance and tax benefits. Kei cars represent one-third of domestic new car sales in Japan.
