It is hard to believe that picture above is taken inside the White House, but in fact it was. The year was about 1950. Several years earlier Truman had suggested that the residence needed some serious restoration.
The structure was so unsafe that the 1948 holiday social events had to be cancelled. The structure was in danger of complete collapse. The fix involved a complete gutting of the buildings interior. All of the walls were removed and put in storage and then the real work began.
