Mount Everest

It was May 29, 1953 that Edmund Hillary and his climbing partner, Tenzing Norgay, were the first to reach the summit of the highest peak in the world.  Hillary took the photo with a Kodak Retina camera using Kodachrome film.  Hillary is said to have refused a photograph when Tenzing offered to return the favor.

Billed as "The World's Largest Horse" Brooklyn Supreme stood 19.2 hands high and weighed 3200 pounds.  He was foaled in 1928.  He measured ten feet two inches around at the girth and each of his shoes was formed from a piece of iron thirty inches long.

An uplifting story from Galveston, Texas

In the Great Storm of 1900 St. Patrick's Catholic Church was heavily damaged.  The tower collapsed and the interior was ruined.  After the repairs were made they raised the entire building five feet.  One hundred men used seven hundred jack screws for thirty five days.  They raised the building one half inch at a time.  Once the correct height was obtained they poured a new concrete foundation to support the structure.  This was part of a huge project to raise the city to protect it from future hurricanes.  Some buildings were raised seventeen feet.

NPR's Science Friday recently talked about actions like this to protect some coastal areas from future damaging storms and surges.  You can listen to the broadcast of that particular show once you access Science Friday's site.

Fort Moore Hill High School

Moving buildings was a lot more common in times past.  In 1886, they moved Fort Moore High School (Los Angeles).   They raised the building and used roller, horses and human labor to inch their way towards its new location. After moving it several blocks the contractor decided it was an impossible task.  They lowered the building and used it as an elementary school.

Messerschmitt KR200

The KR200 was also known as the Kabinenroller (Cabin Scooter).

Messerschmitt was prohibited from producing aircraft for a time after World War II.  In 1955 they produced the Kabinenroller, but by 1956 they once again began to produce aircraft and lost interest in microcars.

The world's first 14 looped rollercoaster is opening May 18th at the Alton Towers Resort in Staffordshire, England.  It's called The Smiler and it sets a Guinness World Record for the most inversions on a coaster ride.

Time marches on

Attempts to reach the owner of this car in Taiyuan, China came up empty for over ten days.  The former parking lot and nearby buildings were taken out as part of a street widening project.  The workers were finally given the go ahead to continue with their work... around the car.
